Why Organic ?

All of our Nopal is produced under strict 100% Organic Standards.  Our farmers use only organic fertilizers and do not use insecticides or Herbicides.

Our Nopal is certified by the Mexican Government as being 100% Organic.

Organic food is raised and processed without synthetic pesticides, artificial ingredients and preservatives, and does not use irradiation or genetically modified organisms (GMOs). When asked why she chooses organic food, nutritionist and author Marcia Zimmerman, MEd, CN, says, “It tastes better.” The Chefs Collaborative agrees: More than 1,500 influential chefs have committed to using good, safe, wholesome food that is locally grown, seasonally fresh, minimally processed, and provided through environmentally sustainable and humane farming and fishing.

Researchers are beginning to quantify scientifically that organic tastes better. John Diener of Greenways Organic, a farming operation that produces both organic and conventional crops, reports that his organic tomatoes consistently receive higher Brix scores (a measure of the sugars in fruits and vegetables). Some studies suggest that organic produce may contain higher levels of some nutrients.

There was article in one of the major Detroit Newspapers about a farm located between Toledo and Detroit.  They have been very successful in growing and selling premium vegetables and fruits and selling them to high class restaurants.  The owner of the farm mentioned that his farm was 100% Organic for one reason.  The produce tastes better.  Much Better.

Growing Organically is more difficult.  Instead of buying a bag of fertilizer.  The farmers have to arrange delivery of Chicken and Cow waste.  This is mixed with other organic wastes and piled into big piles that compost.  The high heat of the compost pile kills all the bacteria present in the animal waste.   The piles are turned a few times and allowed to age.  Then the organic compost is put into bags and delivered to the fields to be spread around the Nopal.

The same holds true for weeding.  With Organic Nopal there is compost spread around the plants by hand and any weeds that appear are pulled by hand.  No spaying with a herbicide is allowed.

The Nopal Powder is all sun dried on special drying tables.  No artificial heaters, ovens. etc

The Organization that we purchase our Nopal from is a Co-Operative in a small town in the Mountains, between Cuernavaca and Mexico City.
